Efforts to end disproportionality in school discipline are gaining ground across the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation.

On January 8, 2014, the US Department of Justice and US Department of Education issued important guidance on disproportionality in school discipline. The Federal Guidance can be found at:

In addition, the University of Virginia Curry School of Education and JustChildren, a Program of the Legal Aid Justice Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, released a groundbreaking report on December 18, 2013 examining discipline disparities in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

COTS, along with Fairfax Zero Tolerance Reform and FAAPE, are committed to ensuring that disproportionality in FCPS discipline outcomes continue to be addressed. On April 21, 2014, the Fairfax County School Board is scheduled to discuss its annual updates to the SR&R at a work session. Vote to approve these updates are scheduled for Thursday, May 8, 2014.
