OCR Complaint Filed Against FCPS Over Discriminatory Practices in TJ Admission and Advanced Academic Program Eligibility

On July 25, 2012, the Coalition of The Silence and the Fairfax County Branch of the NAACP filed a formal civil rights complaint with the US Department of Education against FCPS alleging discrimination in admission to the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ) and in the identification of elementary school students as eligible for highest level Advanced Academic/Gifted and Talented services, a key pipeline for admission to TJ. On September 25, 2012, the US Department of Education formally opened an investigation into the allegations raised in our Complaint. That investigation is ongoing.

As of February 4, 2013, the NAACP-Fairfax County Branch is no longer a party to the OCR Complaint. There are some administrative formalities internal to the branch’s operation that prevent its continued participation.
